Data

Digitized Devotion began as a spreadsheet where we assembled data about books of hours and related manuscripts from four institutions – the Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library, the J. Paul Getty Museum, The Morgan Library and Museum, and The Walters Art Museum. You can view the most recent version of this spreadsheet here.

Our dataset contains 508 manuscript (as opposed to printed) items. Of these, 382 are book of hours, 42 are incomplete or fragmentary books of hours, 62 are psalters or psalter-hours, 19 are prayer books, and 3 are “other.” This last category includes a girdle calendar, a prayer roll, and a quadriptych containing illuminations that may once have been part of a prayer book or book of hours.

The 508 manuscripts included in Digitized Devotion were created between c. 1150 and 1645 CE in present-day Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the region of the eastern Mediterranean.
