Binding description: Dyed straw in geometric patterns over boards, spine rebacked; upper cover has a cross with star decoration in center panel; lower cover has central panel on which a blue paper rectangle is affixed with nails at corners; glued onto this at center is either a drawing in brown ink or engraving of the standing Christ wearing the Crown of Thorns, loin cloth, flesh dotted with dripping blood from whipping, red blood streaks painted onto the body. According to Deborah Evetts, straw bindings of this type were made for books by Napoleonic prisoners.
